The Evolution of the TLC Club –

After the loss of my spouse of 54 years, there was a void in my life. I wanted to be around people who wanted to move on and had a positive outlook on life, just as I was striving so hard to do. There were lots of support groups, bereavement groups and singles groups but what was missing was a women’s group for widows, divorcees, and singles.

A friend of mine in Queens, who was widowed ten years ago, had told me about her women’s group, and I reached out to her to learn what it was all about. I was impressed by the camaraderie the women formed. I had my “eureka” moment! I knew it was my time to start a women’s group right here in Boca Pointe!

I shared my idea with Jane Young, the Social Director at Boca Pointe Country Club and Helen Karpel, the Club Manager. They gave their approval and full support.

Now that I had management on board, I had to figure out how to get this off the ground. First and foremost, I needed a name. The women’s club in Queens was called “TLC” – Tackling Life’s Challenges. I told my creative granddaughter about my club’s name. She said: “I like TLC, but it needs to stand for something positive. You should call it ‘Today Life Continues.’” The second I heard it I knew it was perfect! It was everything I wanted this club to represent. I now had a name and my next task was getting the word out.

Lucky for me, my dear friend and neighbor, Charlotte Spalter – who was widowed six months after me – is a computer “guru.” She jumped right in and before I knew it, our first email was sent. Our committee was formed: Charlotte, Jane and myself.

At our first meeting on June 26th, 2014, we had 14 women in attendance. I am proud to say that one year later, we have over 125 members. I feel such fulfillment and joy when I see the women of the TLC Club greeting each other throughout the club and seeing the bonds we have all formed.

Over the past year, we have enjoyed trips to museums, heard great speakers, spent a day on a cruise, went out to dinners and so much more!

Recently, one of our members was written up on the front page of The New York Times. She published her first children’s book at the age of 80! Her new friends from the TLC Club were so happy for her. As a result of this amazing accomplishment, we asked her to speak about her recent experiences at our next TLC meeting; it was warmly received.

It is a wonderful thing at our age for us to have a whole new network of friends to share milestones and good times with. The TLC Club has given our lives more meaning and fun. Each individual gets something different out of this new-found club.

Here are some quotes from a few select members:

  • “This TLC Club makes me a very happy camper.”
  • “I have met some very wonderful women and for the first time, I feel alive.”
  • “Best thing that happened to me since I started living in Boca Pointe Country Club.”
  • “The TLC Club is not so much about what we do, but who we meet along our journey. The club has proven that many friendships have evolved and many women no longer feel alone.”

The success of this club has come from the wonderful members who attend each and every event with the attitude that “Today Life Continues.” It is with the help of Jane Young and all the volunteers who plan and execute our events, that we have been able to do such great things. I hope everyone has enjoyed the past year as much as I have.

To all my new friends at TLC: thank you for all your hard work and support. Let us continue to celebrate TODAY together!!
